hi!

i recently downloaded a few episodes of my favorite show and they're encoded in a .MKV format
i never heard of this format but i googled some and that's how i found out about zoom player
but i have trouble opening the files....

a red error message pops up:

Unable to play [[a4e]Wolfs's_Rain_01[Divx5.1.1].mkv]
this may be due to a corrupt file, missing filters, filter conflicts, or hardware related issues.

i think you might noticed that the names says Divx5.1.1
i tried that but it also wont work at all. and i see i need to download a bunch of codecs/parsers wathever it is...
i'm pretty confused, i dont know anything about these kinds of stuff xD
please dont say i downloaded all these episodes for nothing because they've eaten my badwitch >.<

So, can anybody help me make this work? What should i do?

It's possible that an audio decoder is missing.

Download the latest ZP v5 release candidate and run the install center and install any missing components.

Okay i downloaded the 5.0 version and all of the codecs but it still wont work :wacko:

now i get a diffrent message: Error, can't open file: The mediumtype of this file is not recognised
(translated from dutch -> english)
then i press OK, but then thesame window pops up again at thesame place. in the end i have to push 3 times OK.
then the error message of before pops up: Unable to play [[a4e]Wolfs's_Rain_01[Divx5.1.1].mkv]
this may be due to a corrupt file, missing filters, filter conflicts, or hardware related issues.

i tried to explain the problem as detailed as possible. any other things i can try?

i just noticed something strange, when i open the folder with all the MKV files in, thesame error message pops up from haali media splitter... : Error, can't open file: The mediumtype of this file is not recognised

I have more luck with the Gabest MKV splitter than with Haali. Gabest codecs+ffdshow+ac3filter is a very simple conflict free and highly format compatible setup. You should be able to play every common format you might come across (including encrypted DVD) without having to worry about other codecs.

ffdshow: These are tryout builds but they are stable. For audio set MP1,2,3 to libmad, AC3 to liba52, DTS to libdts, AAC to libfaad2 and Vorbis to tremor. For video set MPEG1,2 and MPEG in AVI to libmpeg2. Everything else set to libavcodec. Disable WMA/WMV support.

AC3filter: I only use it for the amp and for the channel mixer. This is optional as ffdshow can decode ac3 audio.

You might want to remove all yer previous installed codecs from add/remove programs and reset the windows default codecs to prevent possible conflicts before you install any of the above. To reset the default codecs press the "Registered Filter Manager" button in Zoom Player options System>Filter Management. Unregister anything thats left and then run the "Re-Register System Filters" button to reset everything to the day you installed the OS. I'm referring to V5 but older versions have all these options as well. I just do not remember their location.

I would say the files "may" be corrupt. Can't say for sure without actually having one of the files on hand.

The download completed about 60 seconds after I posted. The files are fine and my above setup works fine. I checked it with Haali in place of Gabest as well and despite the file starting playback a bit slower it also works just fine.

Well I guess you could have downloaded them from a bad source but [a4e] stuff is extremely common and that seems unlikely. Is the CRC32 of [a4e]Wolf's_Rain_01[divx5.1.1].mkv 0B1B5E22?

Well man i seriously dunno when files are corrupted and when they're not...
all files are around 200 MB and there are 30 of em. but if they're corrupted, does this mean that those 4 gigs are just junk? i mean it still is 6 gigabyte...
i downloaded it with a torrent. you dont have to do this if you dont want to, but i'll give you the torrent i used. maybe you can try downloading 1 ep by unchecking downloading all those other eps, and see if the episode is corrupted. but i say it again you dont have to, there's another torrent that's 4 gigs big and the file extensions are .AVI
i wont have any trouble with these xD

the name of the torrent is [A4E]Wolfs rain 01-30, about 6,65 gigs big.

i downloaded those codecs and it still doesn't work. I'm starting to think that the files are indeed all corrupted. But i would like to check that first...
Do you guys know where i can download a video size doesn't matter nor whats on it but with the extension .MKV
if zoomplayer is unable to play it then i know its a problem with the computer. if it works fine then the files are simply corrupted. heck i better hope that's not the case these eps have eaten 6 Gigs of my bandwitch...

That torrent i clean. Thats where I downloaded from yesterday to see if the files where damaged or not. However you shouldn't post that link on the forums as it's piracy.

There are sample MKV files over on the official site you can try.

Mew-Mew is a good sample as it's XviD video, Vorbis audio, and has 16 subtitles.

You can also try out Media Player Classic which is the media player that comes with all the codecs (except ffdshow and ac3filter) built in. It lacks the advanced features of Zoom Player but it usually just works and is pretty popular with Anime fans. Also you can try out VLC which wont even need ffdshow or anything else at all.

Have you actually installed an MKV splitter? Either the Haali or the Gabest version?

okay i tried the samples. the sample mewmew did not work in zoomplayer BUT did work in VLC. i tried VLC with the wolf's rain eps but that din't work too.

well i know the eps are OK now, but i have no clue what's causing this problem.

when i try media player classic, it says 'loading' for a while, then it says 'can't render file'

do i have to make a directX diagnose of my computer? maybe it's the hardware or something.

I don't know what else it could be. It's strange that VLC is failing.

What version of Windows are you running? 95/98/ME and maybe NT 4.0 will proly have issues. 2000/XP/2003 are fine. Beyond that I don't have any more ideas as I have never experienced these problems personally.

i once had issues with other programs, i was missing some .DLL files there. is that maybe the cause?
here are my specs:

windows XP professional
AMD Athlon 2,4 GHZ processor
Nvidia 6800 XT AGP graphics card

if you need more info i'll just post a directX diag.
maybe some rong options in VLC?
here's another thing, the files are indexed(for searching files on the hard drive)
but i dont think that would cause problems like this

I'm seriously out of idea's

System specs are more than fine.
VLC default settings are fine.
Indexing should not cause any problems.
You can do a DirectX diagnostic if you want. I won't have any clue how to interpret it but Blight and others might.
It would not hurt anything to reinstall DirectX just to check. It has recently been updated so it's proly a good idea anyway.
It could be a video driver problem depending on the driver version you have installed. 9x drivers are known to be problematic.

I really don't want to start guessing though so I don't know what else to try.

well, in that case i guess it's unfixable :/
thank's alot for the help. i made small progress with the VLC player (playing that MewMew thing). so i think its possible with the VLC. i'm gonna check their forums, maybe someon up there is experiencing thesame problems as i do.

None of the other MKV samples played?

Wait and see what Blight says before you decide it is unfixable. Their is always the annoying format and re install the OS option but that sucks.

I really don't know how to interpret this kind of information but that looks pretty bad. I'll post the output I get as well as the CRC32 of all 30 episodes just to be 100% sure the files are the same. We downloaded from the exact same torrent so we should have the exact same files unless something went wrong during the download. Bittorrent corrects for corruption though so it is unlikely. You can use winzip or winrar and compress the files in a store zip (store so it wont take a year to compress) or anything else you might know about that can check them. You might want to try running MatroskaDiag on the Mew-Mew sample.

xanatos,
You can try this procedure (it's a bit drastic, but it should clean up your system):
Uninstall ZP, erase the ZP directory if any files remain. Read the clean start section of the media setup guide (link below), reinstall ZP v5 and run the install center to install any missing components.

You may need to configure smart play to make sure ffdshow is used for vorbis/aac audio.
